Honoring Our Volunteers

By Tim Newman
SBC President

As I start to write this, I am in the middle of preparing my first assignment as club president. It's time for the 2024 Awards Banquet where we share some food, fun, and celebrate all our wonderful volunteers along with the 2023 riding season.

As I go through my presentation, I give thanks to many and I highlight a few. But, to be honest, if given the opportunity I would spend the whole time just talking about each one of the longtime members, the backbone of this club. I did highlight two people who are still with the club but are retiring from most duties to simply enjoy riding and whatever in life they choose to do.

I also highlight two others who are still very active, contributing and always there to lend a hand.

I want to acknowledge and say thank you to those members who have done their service work, and maybe did not get properly acknowledged or celebrated in a way I feel they were due. Without them, our club would cease to exist or would be struggling to stay afloat. The countless hours they have given to the club are an example for new members, like myself, who need to step in and fill those spots to further the of the club.

My honorees are:

- Dale Burton, club member 134

- Jakey Ross, club member 757

- Jim Ross, club member 808

- Cathey Philbrick, club member 863

These are among the first 1,000 members and, among that 1,000, they are the people I see contributing on a regular basis.

We will begin honoring our volunteers in the March issue of Spokes with a "Member Spotlight.” I encourage everyone to suggest a volunteer they think deserves to be recognized. Please email me at president@salembicycleclub.org.

Stay safe on the road,
Tim
