Salem Bicycle Club
General Meeting Minutes
November 12, 2024
Painter’s Hall
1.Minutes were approved for the October meeting and also for the 10.30 and 11.4 special meetings
2.Treasurer's Report from Rob giving a strong picture and that we are making money on the CD investment, also no objections to expenses for the month of October. Rob did acknowledge Jackie Lefevre for her tireless work on the books and how his job was made easy by Jackie and Tim working in tandem on the accounting.
3. Membership Report from Julie Glass giving a hopeful report on 40 plus new members for 2024 and a fall off of 30 plus members expiring and not renewing but would hold off on any speculation because of the new website, all of the changes, attrition and would think that 2025 would be a much better gauge because we are becoming a more diversified club
4. Ride Committee-Michael Karnosh was not present but asked Tim to pass on this.
"The Rides Committee is going strong with 10 active members and an ever-growing number of volunteer ride leaders; I can't express how much all your work is appreciated and needed...thank you all. While I'm unable to make it in person tonight (I'm in Spokane for a work conference), I'm excited to have this opportunity to share some plans for the coming year.
Road rides on paved, shared roads have been the bread and butter of this club for decades, and will continue to be the bread and butter. However, a number of cyclists, especially with small children, are looking for shorter routes away from motorized traffic. Additionally, cyclists are expressing a desire to ride routes that include gravel roads in more rural settings. For these reasons we'll be offering two new ride types starting in Spring 2025.
Family rides will be geared toward the youngest riders and their families (although not limited to them), and will take place on non-motorized paths and trails. Gravel rides will feature a wide variety of lengths, settings, and starting/ending points in the Mid-Valley area, focusing on routes that are scenic and relatively peaceful. These rides won't replace any of the road rides the club already offers, and are planned to be offered on alternating Saturdays. Stay tuned for more details in the new year!
See you on the road,"
5. Spokes Update-Dan and Colin Benson saying the learning and transition are going well. Dan will still be involved as a contributor and mentioned Doug Parrow as him finally after 5 years being able to pass the torch along.
6. Monster Cookie-Ken The monster cookie ride continues to be a place where the Salem Bicycle club can continue to make a huge impact. We made some pretty dramatic changes last year and the cycling community has digested those well. Our little project and the hundreds of volunteer hours we put in, put almost 600 hundred riders on the road and almost $10,000 in the bank for the Salem bicycle club. Congratulations to the entire club and thank you for trusting us with this project. We are now looking ahead to year #49 and #50, for which we will ask many of you to step forward again, so we can continue this remarkable success. Our first planning meeting is set for a December 4th, via zoom. Our event date is slated for April 27th, 2025. Please contact Ken freeman at kkfreeman.489@gmail.com for an invite.
We hope to expand and deepen our team with additional team members to help look after SWAG, volunteers, rest stop supplies, course design and marking. These, along with a small army who thinks getting up at 5 AM to work a 10 hour shift starting at 6:30 AM is a good way to invest in our cycling community. Please come join us.
7. Election Results
Online voting was a huge success, we had nearly 30% voting
Juan Lopez-Iron Man Event Coordinator
Robin Williams-New Treasurer (Appointed by Tim Newman President)
Terry Robbins-Event Calendar Coordinator
Colin Benson-Spokes Editor
were voted in.
Wendell Goff did not
The voting was close and I encouraged Wendell to look at other ways to be involved and to run again next year. I related my story that I was not elected the 1st time I ran and I was told that members needed to get to know me and I made it my mission to do just that and get involved, and was elected to board after that and look what role I am playing now
8.Annual Dinner at Marco Polo is set. The Portal will open around Nov 18th
9. Club Accounting is moving to the Cloud. Jackie and Tim have been in discussion in ways to make the accounting more seamless and sustainable when Jackie decided to retire (Tim indicated hopefully not for many more years). They decided on Wave accounting in the cloud and will start the books in Jan of 2025. A vote will happen on that at Dec meeting
10)Swap meet, potluck and SWAG sales
Swap meet went well and most left to a new home
11) Presentation: David Philbrick gave a wonderful presentation on the Guiness Book of Records Lael Wilcox and their encounter and how she represents the biking community.
Meeting
alternatives and even possibly have to pay in 2025. This will be discussed also at December meeting
12) President closing thoughts
To everyone here tonight , thank you for coming. Zooms can not replace in-person and we will always make the best attempt to do first and foremost.
To Jillian Bonnie Norm and Rob, thank you for your dedication and willingness to give of your time to help navigate the club in the many directions and decisions that needed to be made in 2024
To the remaining board members thank you for your service in 2024 and am looking forward to all of the good work we will do in 2025
To the newly voted in board members, welcome and thank you for stepping up and in to help us navigate the club in 2025
And finally to every member, thank you for allowing me to lead the club in 2024 and trusting me again for 2025
good night
13) Next Meeting: .Board Transition Meeting In person Painters Hall
Sat Dec 18th from 6:30pm Zoom
Tim thanked Rob Gramenz and Carol Ramm-Gramenz for hosting the club meetings at Painters Hall for the last 2 years. Since Rob will no longer be on the board, the club may have to look at alternate arrangements.
