The Definition of Volunteerism

Throughout my life I have volunteered for many things, from small to very large organized events. I realize Salem Bicycle Club members also have ramped up their volunteer efforts in recent years.

The Club has changed, transformed, and grown. There's a new website, a new Monster Cookie ride, and a new way of logging and tracking our weekly rides. We're adding outside event rides for credit, participating in several community wellness events, volunteering to support a large Ironman competition, helping educate children as part of the Salem-Keizer Safe routes program for kids, and co-hosting the annual Ride of Silence each May with Salem Bike Vision.

A Definition of Volunteerism: “The act of contributing free labor to conduct community service or support a nonprofit organization. It is the principle of donating time and energy towards a greater cause. Volunteers help change the lives of those in their community as a social responsibility rather than receiving a financial reward.”

I commend all the efforts that our club and its members and I hope the trend will continue. Our collaborating with other clubs and organizations is helping to get the word out that the Salem Bicycle Club is strong, committed to the community and to bike advocacy, health benefits and social engagement.

I am very grateful to be a part of a caring, energetic, and passionate group of bikers. I look forward to the second half of the year and the continued good we are doing in this wonderful community we live in.
