Salem Bike Club History
September is moving quickly, and this month gives us a chance to look both backward and forward: back at the Salem Bike Club’s history, and forward to the members who will help shape what comes next.
What We Found
A few weeks ago, I went to our storage locker to drop off prizes for September’s Bike Corral Wheel of Fun. While unboxing, organizing, and making room on the shelves, I found a box from the club’s permanent records.
When we moved from the old locker, we placed those records on a shelf but never dug into them. Inside was a treasure trove of Spokes newsletters from 1983 through 2020, carefully preserved by Doug Parrow.Click Link: Spokes Newsletters-Scroll to Bottom
Why It Matters
It felt like Christmas. I pulled out a few early issues, thumbed through them, and quickly decided the collection needed to come home with me so it could be added to the website.
Preserving the club’s history is a major focus for the current board because the past helped make this club what it is today. Until I saw these newsletters, I knew only the stories, online references, and word-of-mouth pieces that had been passed along.
So many members have given their time and energy to the club year after year, and many still do. I am excited and humbled to play a small part in preserving that legacy and helping the club continue strong into the future.
