The Salem Bicycle Club was formed in 1969 for the purpose of promoting recreational bicycle tours in the local area. Over the years, bicycle advocacy for improved biking conditions has been a priority as well. Since formation of the Salem Bicycle Club, it has grown to more than 400 members. The club supports the advocacy work of the League of American Bicyclists and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. The club schedules weekly rides each weekend throughout the year. During the summer, the club also schedules week day evening rides and overnight rides. Ride distances range from 15 to 135 miles. Many routes are specially designed for novices. All rides have assigned ride coordinators. The club annually sponsors two event rides which are widely publicized and draw cyclists from throughout the Northwest. These rides are the Monster Cookie Ride on the last Sunday in April and the Peach of a Century on the last Sunday in September. The club's newsletter, Spokes, is published 10 times each year. The newsletter provides members with the monthly rides list and includes other information and articles of interest to local bicyclists. Recent articles from the newsletter and information on how to submit articles for publication or on how to obtain permission to reprint articles which have appeared in the newsletter are available on-line. Monthly club meetings include programs on bicycle maintenance and repair, bicycle touring, health and exercise, riding law, and safety. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month except December and January and start with a social half-hour at 6:30 p.m. JoAnn Dewey is club president. David Philbrick is membership coordinator. First United Methodist Church The club's web site will be the focus of the February program. During the last couple years, the site has undergone several major changes. An on-line registration system was developed for Event Rides, the old Topica email list was replaced with the forum, and ride mileage tracking was moved on-line. Come to the February meeting to find out how to better use the web site and to get your questions answered.
2009 Road Animal Awards Redemption Extended!
The 2009 R oad Animal Award is an I.C.E. Band. Each person who rode in both the Monster Cookie and the Peach of a Century should have received a coupon and order form for their personalized I.C.E. Band. The expiration date on the coupons is February 28, 2010. However, with the cooperation of I.C.E. Bands Northwest, the deadline for redeeming the coupons has been extended to April 30. The contact information that these bands can provide is important in an emergency and we urge all Road Animals to redeem their coupons promptly. |
